What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese holistic therapy. It is a gentle form of drug free healing with its own unique system of diagnosis and disease identification. Gentle stimulation of precise acupuncture points with very fine stainless steel pins, will aid the body's own defensive and self healing systems, thus promoting the healing process and maintaining good health.

Chinese Medicine is a widely sought therapy for many conditions which do not respond well to Western medical drugs or surgery. Acupuncture can be used to heal and correct specific complaints, or as a system to fine tune imbalances within the body which may not be so obvious. Many patients interested in long-term health use acupuncture to "stay well".

What can acupuncture treat?

The World Health Organisation has published a list of diseases that respond positively to acupuncture. They include:

  • UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT AND RESPIRATORY DISORDERS

Sinusitis, rhinitis, colds, tonsillitis, acute bronchitis and bronchial asthma.

  • GASTRO-INTESTINAL DISORDERS

Acute and chronic gastritis, gastric hyperacidity, the pain of duodenal ulcers, acute and chronic colitis, constipation and diarrhoea.

  • NEUROLOGICAL AND MUSCULO-SKELETAL DISORDERS

Bells palsy , headache, migraine, trigeminal neuralgia, post-stroke paralysis, shingles, Meniere's disease, intercostal neuralgia, neck/arm syndromes, tennis elbow, sciatica, low-back pain and osteoarthritis.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Many people are fearful of needles as they associate them with the injections they have received in the past. Acupuncture needles are extremely fine and there is nothing injected through the needles to cause irritation or pain. Often a sensation of heaviness or numbness or aching can be felt. Most patients report a sense of relaxation or euphoria during or after the treatment. Laser acupuncture can be used for those needle shy individuals.

Is there a risk of infection?

In these times of blood borne diseases such as Hepatitis and HIV many people are concerned about the spread of infection by acupuncture needles. Only single use, sterile disposable needles are used in this centre.
